1/19 Content Directive - Guidelines for Covering the Inauguration

Hello! Many of you have asked about best practices for covering the Inauguration, so we thought that this would be a great opportunity to revisit some of our brand guidelines that pertain to the event, and use those as a platform for recommending how we approach content around the inauguration itself. Let's dig in.

 Our brand is...

Revelrous. We love a good party. And the Inauguration is certainly a cause for one. We recommend highlighting options for users to have a great time safely, such as:
  • Guides to Cocktails To-Go
  • Delivery & Take-Out Guides
  • Socially-Distant Watch Parties happening in your city (if applicable)
Rooted in Music. There are three official artist-heavy stream celebrations on Inauguration Day:
We recommend highlighting these events with a focus on the performances, as they're a natural way for us to talk about the inauguration while remaining on-brand. There's also an unrelated Joe Bonamassa show (but, hey, Joe Bonamassa rocks after a few cocktails), a performance by Travis Shallow, and likely a few smaller live streams potentially happening in each market. Lastly, Biden and Harris have shared their 46-song Inauguration Playlist, which makes for a great conversation starter on social. (What's your favorite track? What was the most surprising pick?!)

Local. If there are any local musicians, artists and/or venues throwing Inauguration Day celebrations and/or livestreams in your market, it's important to highlight those -- potentially above all the ones happening nationally. We're here to support local, you know? Additionally, if any local artists have released songs, music videos, street art, or anything else in conjunction with the Inauguration, we should absolutely highlight those.

Diverse. While it's good for us to dedicate a portion of our content to the Inauguration, it's also important to make sure that the Inauguration doesn't overrun our feeds. The Inauguration is going to get plenty of coverage around the internet -- and some users (whatever their political stance may be) may need a break from all of it and are just looking to have a good time. Let's help em out.

Positive. While it's rad to celebrate Biden's inauguration and allude to better days ahead, I would like us to refrain from dumping on Trump or being negative. That's not our place; let's keep it merry.

Cool. We should avoid vapid and overused phrases like "On this historic day for America..". We should keep it cool, concise and avoid overly editorializing on the Inauguration and/or Biden's presidency.

Thinking Ahead. In normal times, we list the best parties happening tonight and are also the first people to alert our users to show announcements happening in the future. Along similar lines, this is a great opportunity to remind your users that the work for change never stops; the next elections in their city are coming up before they know it, and the work for all upcoming elections begins now. It's never too early to make sure your friends, family, and neighbors are registered to vote: Both Voto Latino and Headcount have excellent resources for getting involved, including informational live streams and digital events to learn more and stay motivated.

Expressed Visually. It's not all just about the text. It's always important to make sure the imagery we're using - regardless of what the subject matter may be - fit our tone and our brand, and are images that we have the right to use. More information on image rights guidance can be found in this article. We've asked our buddy who is in DC photographing this week if we can use any of his photos. We'll send them your way if he says yes!

Agile. I hate that I even have to say this, but: While we're expecting a relatively smooth and peaceful Inauguration, it is important to be prepared for the worst. If something violent should happen, I will give an alert over Slack and email to pause all content for the time being until we can figure out the best course of next action. Please keep your eyes on both apps for any potential immediate directives.

Collaborative. Please don't hesitate to reach out if you'd like an extra set of eyes on your content - today, tomorrow, or whenever!

We hope that this review sets you on the path to success with your content over the next few days. Please reach out if you have any questions or would like anything added to this directive!
