Using 3rd Party Ad Tags: Mailchimp

Advertisers sometimes request that we use their own ad reporting tags when setting up ads on our sites.   This allows them to track ad impressions and clicks in their own reporting system.

DoubleClick Tags
There are many different ad serving platforms, but the one you'll likely encounter most frequently is Google DoubleClick.  Our platform supports DoubleClick's Standard Tags & Click Tracker Tags but does not support iFrame or Javascript Tags.  Standard Tags will consist of a single Impression Pixel and a single Click Tracker.

Setting up Mailchimp Campaigns with DoubleClick Ad Tags:
The partner will likely send you a spreadsheet containing a unique impression and click tag for each individual ad placement.  Before copying any impression or click tags from the sheet, make sure to review the Placement Names on the sheet and be careful to copy the tags that correspond to each type of brand ad.

Once you've found the correct tags on the partner's DoubleClick Tag sheet:
ADD THE STANDARD TAG (aka Impression Pixel)
1. From the partner's spreadsheet, copy the placement's Standard Tag:
<A HREF=";sz=1x1;ord=[timestamp]?"> <IMG SRC=";sz=1x1;ord=[timestamp];dc_lat=;dc_rdid=;tag_for_child_directed_treatment=?" BORDER=0 WIDTH=1 HEIGHT=1 ALT="Advertisement"></A>

2. Change all locations of [timestamp] to *|UNIQID|*
<A HREF=";sz=1x1;ord=*|UNIQID|*?"> <IMG SRC=";sz=1x1;ord=*|UNIQID|*;dc_lat=;dc_rdid=;tag_for_child_directed_treatment=?" BORDER=0 WIDTH=1 HEIGHT=1 ALT="Advertisement"></A>

3. Drag a Mailchimp "Code" content block into the email's Preheader section, making sure to put it just below your preview text block

4. Delete the Code content block's placeholder HTML and replace with the Standard Tag, using  *|UNIQID|* in place of [timestamp]

5. Save & Close the content block.

Note:  For the purposes of this documentation, we're using a Sponsored Email Header as the example.  However if you are trying to add 3rd Party Ad Tags to a certain Featured Content block or Featured Event Ad in your email, the Standard Tags can alternatively be placed above those specific content blocks.

1. Copy the placement's Click Tracker Tag (sometimes found on a 2nd tab of the Tag spreadsheet):;200951799;d

2. Choose the image, button or text you are trying to link, then paste the full Click Tracker Tag into the link field.  Easy peasy.

Atlas Tags
Another common ad serving platform is Atlas by Facebook.  Here's how to properly setup a Mailchimp Campaign with your partner's Atlas Tags included:

1. From the partner's Atlas spreadsheet, copy the placement's View Tag:;adv=1130180;ec=1130720083;c.a=15951;p.a=153083;a.a=2348146;s.a=15083;idfa=;idfa_lat=;aaid=;aaid_lat=;cache=

3. After "cache=" add *|UNIQID|*;adv=1130180;ec=1130720083;c.a=15951;p.a=153083;a.a=2348146;s.a=15083;idfa=;idfa_lat=;aaid=;aaid_lat=;cache=*|UNIQID|*

4. Wrap the View Tag URL in the highlighted HTML to make the tag load as a 1x1px image:
<IMG SRC=";adv=1130180;ec=1130720083;c.a=15951;p.a=153083;a.a=2348146;s.a=15083;idfa=;idfa_lat=;aaid=;aaid_lat=;cache=*|UNIQID|*" BORDER=0 WIDTH=1 HEIGHT=1 ALT="Advertisement">

5. Just like in the DoubleClick section above, drag a Code content block into the Campaign editor, then paste your View Tag + HTML into the editor widget.

6. From the partner's Atlas spreadsheet, copy the placement's Click Tag URL;adv=11307200845180;ec=11307200850233;c.a=11495951;p.a=153053034;a.a=323408146;s.a=153053034;idfa=;idfa_lat=;aaid=;aaid_lat=;cache=;qpb=1;?h=

7. Just like in the DoubleClick section above, input the Click Tag URL in any image, button or text's Web Address (URL) field when converting the element to a link in Mailchimp's editor.

Other Tags
DoubleClick and Atlas are definitely the industry leaders, but they're not the only ones you may encounter.  If an advertiser provides you with another service's ad tags, send the tags to and we'll help you get them properly setup.
